Why You Should Go on the Second Date (Even If You Don't Feel Chemistry Yet)

Why You Should Go on the Second Date (Even If You Don't Feel Chemistry Yet)

You had a perfectly nice evening. Good conversation, no awkward silences, and you genuinely liked them as a person. But when a friend asked if you were excited to see them again, you hesitated.

"I just didn't feel the chemistry," you said.

And so you moved on.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. But here is something worth sitting with: that feeling of instant chemistry you are waiting for may be less reliable than you think. In fact, the science suggests that waiting for love at first sight could be causing you to walk away from exactly the person you have been looking for.

The Statistic That Will Change How You Date

Dr. Justin Garcia, Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute and one of the leading researchers in the science of love and relationships, recently shared a finding that stopped us in our tracks.

According to Kinsey Institute research published in the Singles in America study, in a national sample of single adults, over 70% reported that they had fallen for someone they initially did not think they could. Someone they did not feel immediate chemistry with. A friend, a colleague, someone they went on a first date with and thought, "Nice enough, but not for me."

Seventy percent.

And yet, in that same study, six out of ten singles said they believe in love at first sight.

We are walking around convinced we will know it when we see it. And the data keeps showing us that we usually do not, at least not at first.

Why First Dates Are Not the Whole Story

First dates come with pressure. You are managing nerves, trying to present your best self, making small talk with a near-stranger in a public place. It is not exactly the environment where deep connection tends to flourish.

What you are often evaluating on a first date is not true compatibility. You are evaluating nerves. Surface-level impression. Whether someone is exactly what you pictured before you walked in.

The Kinsey Institute data backs this up: attraction is often responsive. It builds in the context of another person. You learn someone's sense of humor, the way they think, what lights them up. And something shifts. That shift rarely happens in 90 minutes over dinner.

The second and third dates are where real information lives.

The Curiosity Factor

Dr. Garcia put it simply: curiosity is a powerful aphrodisiac, and most of us are not cultivating it.

When we write someone off after a first meeting, we are closing the door on curiosity. We are deciding we already know enough to walk away. But real connection, the kind that becomes a lasting relationship, tends to grow in the space where we stay open long enough to actually get to know someone.

That takes time. It takes showing up more than once.

As matchmakers, we see this play out regularly. A client goes on a first date, has a pleasant time, and hesitates about a second. They go anyway. A few weeks later, they are texting us that they cannot believe they almost passed on this person.

It happens more than you would think.

What This Means for Your Dating Life

This does not mean ignoring red flags or forcing something that clearly is not there. It means adjusting the question you are asking yourself after a first date.

Instead of "Did I feel instant chemistry?" try asking: "Was there anything genuinely good here? Am I curious about who this person really is?"

If the answer is yes, that is reason enough to find out more.

The singles who find lasting, meaningful relationships are not the ones who held out for the perfect first impression.

They are the ones who stayed curious long enough for something real to grow.
